Sutton Bank

Sometime between about 1816 and 1818, Turner made a short tour to Rievaulx Abbey and Scarborough from Farnley Hall near Otley, the Yorkshire home of his friend, Walter Fawkes.  On the way he visited Sutton Bank, where the Thirsk to Helmsley road climbs a steep 140m ascent up the western crags of the Hambleton Hills and the summit is one of the most celebrated viewpoints in Yorkshire, commanding the whole of the central plains towards the Pennines.

His sketches of this area have only very recently been identified as Sutton Bank as part of a comprehensive cataloguing of Turner's Yorkshire sketches for the Tate by Professor David Hill of the University of Leeds.

Turner's Viewpoint

Turner made six double-page sketches at Sutton Bank, panning round on successive pages to record views from Roulston Scar and Hood Hill towards the south to Gormire Lake and Whitestone Cliff towards the north (see from Hambleton, with Moor and Pool [Turner] in Distance, 'Yorkshire 6' sketchbook, Tate Gallery, Finberg number: CXLIX 289a to Road over Moors, 'Yorkshire 6' sketchbook, Tate Gallery, Finberg number: CXLIX 295).

On the evidence of these sketches, Turner was planning an important treatment of the subject, but he does not appear to have completed any finished version of the Sutton Bank panorama.
