The Hepworth Wakefield
Yorkshire's major new art gallery opened on 21 May 2011. Designed by acclaimed British architect, David Chipperfield and located on the waterfront in Wakefield, The Hepworth Wakefield unveiled a previously unseen collection of sculptures by Barbara Hepworth who was born and raised in Wakefield.
The new building provides a fitting home for the outstanding collection of art previously on display at Wakefield Art Gallery, alongside a changing programme of contemporary and historical exhibitions. The gallery displays include Wakefield and Yorkshire in Pictures, a space dedicated to topographical studies of Yorkshire, including images of Chantry Chapel, Wakefield.
Turner's On View
The Hepworth Wakefield is located across the road from the Chantry Chapel, one of Turner's watercolour productions and is home to The Turner Trails bench. The Turner Trails panel is located on a viewing platform overlooking the River Calder close to the footbridge which takes you to The Hepworth Wakefield. It offers a great view of the river and The Hepworth and a side view of the Chantry Chapel.
Turner's watercolour of Wakefield Bridge, including the Chantry Chapel, has been kindly loaned to The Hepworth Wakefield, by the British Museum and is on display in The Yorkshire in Pictures gallery (Gallery 6), from where you can also enjoy the view of the Chantry Chapel through the Gallery's window.
